Def Leppard ‘surprised’ to make another album | Entertainment and celebrity news

Def Leppard did not plan to release another album before the pandemic hit.

The ‘For Some Sugar On Me’ rockers returned with their first album in nearly seven years in May, ‘Diamond Star Halos’, but frontman Joe – who is joined by Phil Collen, Vivian Campbell, Rick Savage and Rick Allen into the glam rock band – admits it was only because they had nothing else to do amid the COVID-19 crisis that they decided to make a remote record.

In an interview with the new issue of Goldmine magazine – which they star in – Joe said: “When you look at how it all started.

“We hadn’t planned to make an album, but the pandemic presented us with the opportunity to make one because there was literally nothing else to do but waste time, which is not really in our DNA.

“We were supposed to hit the road in 2020, in mid-June.

“So the rehearsals were going to be in May.

“Everyone was coming to my studio in Ireland on March 22.

“They were to arrive until all flights were canceled and the lockdown was announced.

“We had no idea how long the lockdown would last.

“Is it going to be a week, two weeks or a month, two months, three months?

“Once we realized we couldn’t get together, I phoned Phil, who was in California.

“Within about 40 minutes of that phone call, we’d flipped everything we had on the metaphorical table and said, ‘OK, great, we’ve got seven songs we could work on until the pandemic subsides.

“But it was never clear, so we kept working and we worked on those seven songs, and me and Phil over the spring and summer of 2020 wrote five more.”

Luckily, living in different parts of the world, they were used to working remotely.

“Diamond Star Halos” reached the top 5 on the Official UK Albums Chart.
